How Indiana's Under One Roof Campaign Impacts Communities
Midwest Food Bank Indiana has announced plans for a new 50,000-square-foot warehouse that will bring operations under one roof. The $9 million "Under One Roof" campaign will allow staff and volunteers to work more efficiently, reduce costs, and serve more Hoosiers across the state.
The vision is close to becoming reality. With $7 million already pledged, only $500,000 more is needed to complete the campaign.
"Every day, we face the challenge of operating out of two separate warehouses, which makes it harder to serve those who rely on us," says Diara Nicholson, Executive Director. "A unified space means we can serve more people, support more volunteers, and respond more quickly when hunger strikes."
Gifts Making It Possible
This effort has been made possible by generous donors. The Jean and Bernas Downing Charitable Trust provided a lead gift of $4 million. Their legacy of care inspired $1 million in pledges from churches, businesses, and individuals. Lilly Endowment Inc. has also committed $2 million, continuing its long history of addressing food insecurity in Indiana.
"I am inspired by these passionate donors," says Marcie Luhigo, Development Director. "Their support means we can feed 240,000 Hoosiers each year. With 44 partners on the waitlist, this project will allow us to serve more communities, including rural areas that are desperate for food support."
Impact by the Numbers
- One million Hoosiers, including one in five children, lack regular access to safe and nutritious food.
- Midwest Food Bank Indiana provides 24.5 million meals annually.
- Every $1 donated becomes $30 in food through an efficient distribution model supported by 2,500 volunteers.
- More than 20 million pounds of food are rescued from waste each year, reducing CO2 emissions equivalent to one million cars.
How to Help
Thanks to a challenge grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., the next $500,000 raised will be matched dollar for dollar. To support the campaign, visit the Under One Roof Capital Campaign page.
This project represents more than a building. It is about people, service, and compassion shared across Indiana.
