7 Microwave Tips to Make Your Meals Better

Microwaves are quick, convenient, and often the most accessible way to prepare a warm meal. However, with a few simple adjustments, you can make your food taste fresher, heat more evenly, and even reduce waste.

1. Arrange food in a ring

Place food in a circle on the plate, leaving the center empty. This encourages even cooking since microwaves heat from the outer edges inward.

2. Add a splash of water

Rice, pasta, or bread can dry out when microwaved. A spoonful of water restores moisture and texture.

3. Use a microwave-safe cover

Covering food helps trap steam, keeping meals moist and preventing splatters. A reusable silicone cover or damp paper towel works well.

4. Stir halfway through

Stopping midway to stir ensures even heating and avoids cold spots, especially with soups or casseroles.

5. Heat in smaller portions

Large servings heat unevenly. Reheat smaller portions at a time for better results..

6. Use lower power settings

For delicate foods like eggs, vegetables, or leftovers with mixed textures, try a power setting of 50–70%. Slower heating can improve flavor and consistency.

7. Let it rest

Allowing food to sit for a minute or two after heating helps the temperature distribute evenly, reducing hot and cold bites.

Why It Matters

For many of us, microwaves are simply a convenience. But for some families, especially those receiving food assistance, a microwave may be the only appliance available to prepare a meal. At Midwest Food Bank, we see firsthand how essential these small tools can be. By sharing both food and practical knowledge, we help ensure every family has not just something to eat, but a warm, nourishing meal to enjoy.
