Harrisburg Shelter Programs Support Men, Women, and Families in Crisis
We are excited to highlight Christian Churches United (CCU) this month and recognize the work they do each day to support individuals and families facing homelessness in Harrisburg. Through shelter programs, housing support, meals, and case management, CCU walks alongside people during some of the hardest seasons of life.
Located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, CCU serves the community through several ministries, including Susquehanna Harbor Safe Haven, HELP Ministries, and the Women’s Overnight Shelter. Together, these programs provide emergency shelter, housing support, meals, and long-term stability services for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
Susquehanna Harbor Safe Haven serves up to 25 men at a time through its residential program and also provides additional overnight shelter services during the winter months. The Women’s Overnight Shelter can serve up to 26 women each night and has supported close to 100 women throughout the year. HELP Ministries also works with adults and families through rapid rehousing services, helping participants build stability through budgeting, parenting support, goal setting, and case management.
More than 200 volunteers support CCU programs throughout the year. Churches, community groups, and local partners assist with meals, donations, outreach, special events, and daily program support.
The best part of working at Safe Haven is watching people rebuild their lives. Being part of helping someone find stability, confidence, housing, employment, or simply hope again is the most meaningful part of the work.
Denise Sturnes, Program Manager
One resident entered the program after years of homelessness and instability. Through consistent support, accountability, and access to resources, he began rebuilding trust, securing income, and moving toward permanent housing. Stories like this reflect the importance of safe shelter, reliable meals, and people who continue showing up.
Midwest Food Bank helps support CCU’s work by providing food that allows staff and volunteers to serve meals consistently and care for residents with dignity. Access to dependable food support helps relieve financial strain and allows CCU to focus on long-term housing and stability goals for the people they serve.
