One local partnership has quietly helped hundreds of neighbors every month by making food assistance welcoming, compassionate, and community driven.
For more than four decades, Washington Helps Its People (WHIP) has been serving neighbors facing difficult circumstances. Since partnering with Midwest Food Bank in 2016, the organization has expanded its ability to provide community food assistance Illinois residents can rely on. Today, approximately 300 individuals each month receive food and essential household items through this partnership.
The work is about much more than distributing groceries. It is about making sure every person who walks through the door feels welcomed, respected, and supported.
WHIP’s partnership with Midwest Food Bank helps ensure shelves remain stocked with a wide variety of products that meet the changing needs of local families. Together, they continue helping neighbors through consistent access to food and everyday essentials.

A Mission Born During a Time of Need
WHIP was founded in 1983 after a strike at Caterpillar left many Washington families struggling financially. Community members recognized an immediate need and came together to provide food and assistance during a difficult period.
That spirit of neighbors helping neighbors never disappeared.
Over the years, WHIP has continued serving the community thanks to dedicated volunteers, generous donors, local businesses, churches, and trusted partners like Midwest Food Bank.
Each generation has helped carry the mission forward.

From Volunteer to Executive Director
Executive Director Lori Westson first became involved with WHIP as a volunteer. Her commitment grew even stronger after the devastating tornado that struck Washington in 2013. During the recovery, WHIP became an important resource for families who had lost homes and possessions. The response from the community was overwhelming as food donations, financial gifts, and volunteers stepped forward to help.
That experience reinforced how powerful a caring community can be. When WHIP later needed new leadership, Lori recognized the opportunity to continue serving an organization she already knew well. She stepped into the role to help ensure the mission would continue uninterrupted. Today, she helps guide an organization built on compassion, consistency, and community partnerships.

Meeting Needs That Are Often Invisible
The people served by WHIP come from many different backgrounds. Some are retired. Some are raising children. Many have jobs but still struggle with rising housing, utility, healthcare, and grocery costs. Others earn too much to qualify for government assistance while still finding it difficult to cover everyday expenses.
These realities make community food assistance Illinois programs increasingly important. WHIP helps bridge the gap by providing food and household essentials that can ease financial pressure for families throughout the month.
Â
Removing the Stigma Around Asking for Help
One of WHIP’s highest priorities is creating an environment where people feel comfortable asking for assistance. Seeking help should never be a source of embarrassment.
The organization intentionally welcomes every individual with dignity, kindness, and respect. By focusing on relationships rather than transactions, WHIP works to change perceptions about food pantries and remind people that anyone can experience unexpected financial hardship. This commitment to dignity remains at the center of every interaction.

Strong Partnerships Make Strong Communities
WHIP’s success depends on collaboration throughout Washington. Support comes from, Midwest Food Bank, Local churches, Area businesses, Individual donors, Dedicated volunteers. Together, these partnerships allow WHIP to consistently provide food while strengthening connections across the community.
Midwest Food Bank remains an important partner by supplying products that help WHIP serve hundreds of individuals each month. This ongoing collaboration demonstrates how organizations can accomplish more when they work together toward a shared mission.
