COVID-19 causing unique hardships in Kenya

Like many places in the world, COVID-19 has changed life in Kenya. The nation is on a lockdown. Schools and businesses are closed.

Children who would normally eat breakfast and lunch at school, are now at home eating nothing. Many Kenyans are day laborers paid one day at a time. Most are now out of work with no income, health insurance or unemployment benefits. There is no welfare system.

Those who live in the slums of Nairobi are used to scavenging in the dumps for food and things to sell when times get hard. Most of the “edible” garbage comes from restaurants, which are now closed. Sellable items come from businesses, which are also closed. Even those willing to scavenge are going hungry.
