Giving From a Heart That Knows Hardship

We often see faces in a line or names on a sign in sheet, but behind each one is a story. When we met Tristan at a pantry distribution where she receives food for her family, her courage and steady heart reminded us why hunger relief is about more than food. It is about fellowship, dignity, and compassion.

Tristan’s days begin early and end late. As a stay at home mom, she cares for two young children, her younger brother, and her boyfriend’s brother. The food she receives at the pantry helps steady their household during tight weeks, offering relief when her budget can no longer stretch. Her boyfriend works long hours at a manufacturing plant, and most of their time together is spent caring for the family, grocery shopping, and preparing for the next week.

She manages their tight budget with a computer spreadsheet and prayer. Careful planning helps stretch every dollar, but unexpected repairs like broken air conditioners make daily life uncertain. She continues to seek out small ways to earn extra income, doing what she can to support her family. “Some days it feels like people see me as ‘crazy’ for being so frazzled,” says Tristan. “But they don’t see the full picture. I’m doing my best.”

The loss of Tristan’s grandmother left a deep ache. She had been Tristan’s emotional anchor. In the same season, her mother underwent back surgery and was unable to work or help with the children. The emotional and practical strain grew heavier.

Even with an hour drive to reach the pantry, Tristan rarely misses a distribution. She arrives early with her children to help unload trucks and sort food in the parking lot. The work is hot and tiring, yet it is filled with laughter, teamwork, and a shared purpose.

She notices neighbors who hesitate to come. Pride and stigma can keep people from receiving help, something that weighs on her. “No one should feel ashamed to ask for help. We are all just doing our best,” says Tristan.

Despite her own challenges, Tristan finds joy in giving to others. She brings hope to others by showing up, smiling, and serving. Her faith and humility shape every one of her actions.

Stories like Tristan’s remind us why this mission matters. Every box packed, every truck unloaded, and every prayer shared helps lift the weight a little for families walking through hard seasons. Support families like Tristan’s by making a gift today.
