“Nikama Mungu ameshuka” is how children in Kenya described an unplanned visit from Kapu Africa (Midwest Food Bank East Africa) in December. That Swahili phrase translates “God has come down”.
Kapu Africa delivered milk and yogurt to two sites in the Nairobi area on a December day. Godwin Matswa, a Kapu employee, arrived at Bondeni Rescue Center near Nairobi and was greeted by Charles and Florence Gitau. The couple oversee the center that houses about 300 orphans and abandoned children ages three to 23. Lunch was being served when Godwin arrived and the delivery added smiles to accompany the meal of boiled maize and beans.
The same delivery surprised Kwetu Home of Peace, managed by Catholic Nun Sister Gladys. Kwetu is home to males ages 7-23.
The young men wanted Godwin to know that this kind gesture will not go unrewarded.
The milk and yogurt add nutrition to the meals served at both locations. The food is just part of the delivery – tumaini (hope) and furaha (joy and happiness) were served up too.
