Many wonderful people make things happen at Midwest Food Bank. Passionate volunteers, generous financial and food donors, and dedicated staff all play a part in bringing the MFB mission to life.
Then there are the other wonderful people, those who receive the food. Meet Priscilla. She is a student who receives supplemental food from the School Street Pantry in Normal, IL, a nonprofit partner of MFB Normal. The School Street Food Pantry provides food and supplies to currently-enrolled college and trade school students in the Bloomington-Normal, Illinois area who are experiencing food insecurity.
Priscilla has visited the food pantry every Friday for about a year. She also serves as a volunteer at the pantry. Priscilla looks for cereals, oatmeal, peanut butter, spices, produce, meats, and dairy products.
“I am always thankful when fresh produce is available,” says Priscilla. “I would like to see even more.”
The goal at MFB is that 35% of the food we receive and distribute is protein, produce, or dairy. We recognize the importance of this for those who receive our food.
Produce, freezer items, bread, pasta, and snack items are the things most students take. Priscilla sees some diversity in the food, like halal meat and a wide variety of spices and produce.
