Morton is known as the Pumpkin Capital of the World, with more than 85 percent of the world’s canned pumpkin produced at the Nestlé plant in town. Each September, the community celebrates with the Morton Pumpkin Festival, and Midwest Food Bank was grateful to join the festivities this year.
Midwest Food Bank Morton participated in the Pumpkin Pedal, hosted by Better Banks, where community members rode a bike route through town. An added blessing was that part of the registration fee supported the Tender Mercies program, which provides nutritious, shelf-stable meals to those facing food insecurity. As the week ended, the Pumpkin Festival Parade welcomed an estimated 100,000 visitors to Morton. Midwest Food Bank Morton walked alongside its van, passing out donated Cheez-It packages and Rice Krispies to parade goers. The cheers and applause along the route reflected the community’s strong support for the mission of serving others.
