Midwest Food Bank East Africa is entering a significant new chapter in its mission to fight hunger and malnutrition through the expansion of school feeding programs across Kenya.
Through new partnerships with Soy Afric Ltd, The Amina Myrén Foundation, and Kenya’s Ministry of Education, Nutridence is now launching in four counties: Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kwale, and Mombasa County. This marks Midwest Food Bank East Africa’s first major expansion into government-run public schools.
Nutridence, also known as Tender Mercies in other regions, is a grain-based nutrition meal developed to help address malnutrition and improve student wellness. The fortified meal includes rice, dehydrated beans, soy chunks, vitamins, and minerals designed to support healthy growth and development for children.
The initiative officially launched with pilot programs in schools throughout Kwale County and Elgeyo Marakwet County, bringing together education leaders, public health officials, and community partners committed to improving outcomes for students.
In Elgeyo Marakwet County, Midwest Food Bank East Africa met with directors from public health, education, and nutrition departments to help prepare for county-wide assessments and implementation planning. Leadership teams gathered to align on long-term goals and discuss how nutrition support can strengthen student attendance, concentration, and academic performance.
Additional launch events in Kwale County highlighted the broader purpose behind the program. Leaders emphasized that consistent nutrition is foundational to both education and long-term community development. The pilot program will also include anthropometric assessments to help monitor student growth and health improvements throughout the year.
The expansion reflects a growing commitment to preventative solutions that address the root causes of educational barriers caused by hunger and malnutrition. By ensuring students receive dependable nutrition during the school day, the program aims to support stronger learning environments and healthier futures.
As the initiative grows across Kenya, Midwest Food Bank East Africa continues building partnerships that create sustainable impact for children, families, and communities.
Healthy students build stronger communities.
