For Bob and Marsha Chichanski, volunteering at Midwest Food Bank Georgia has become more than a way to give back. It has become part of their daily rhythm, their community, and their purpose in retirement.
The couple, originally from Ohio, has been married for 43 years and has called Peachtree City home since 1987. Along the way, they built careers, raised a family, and stayed deeply connected to their community and church.
Marsha recently retired after many years in education throughout Fayette and Coweta counties, while Bob spent his career working in manufacturing operations, finance, and purchasing. Together, they raised two children, Matt and Taelor, adopted from South Korea. Today, Taelor works as a physician assistant in the Atlanta area, while the memory of their son Matt continues to shape their perspective on life and service after his passing from colon cancer at age 28.
Before retirement, Bob and Marsha occasionally volunteered at Midwest Food Bank with church groups, helping sort produce and package canned goods. After Bob retired in 2023, they began serving regularly and quickly became part of the volunteer community.
Today, they help wherever needed, from loadout days and Trader Joe’s pickups to repacking projects, meal boxes, and food sorting.
For them, volunteering is rooted in a simple belief.
“It always feels good to give back. It’s our duty to help others.”
While the work itself is meaningful, the relationships have become just as important. Bob and Marsha say one of the best parts of volunteering has been meeting people with generous hearts and building new friendships during retirement.
“The people, it’s our new friend group since retirement.”
They also appreciate the sense of purpose and activity that comes with serving consistently each week.
“Honestly, it gets me out of bed in the mornings.”
Through every box packed, pallet loaded, and meal distributed, Bob and Marsha continue helping bring hope and support to families across Georgia.
