Students with a heart to help MFB Haiti

A news story, an internet search, and an email led to a donation to Midwest Food Bank Haiti.

When Evelyn Veliz saw the news story about the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Haiti in August, she wanted to help. But how? As a medical student at Southern Illinois University, she knew medical supplies would be needed as well as food.

Evelyn found Midwest Food Bank through an internet search and sent an email to a board member for MFB Haiti. She then organized a collection of peanut butter and medical supplies through the SIU Latino Medical Student Association at the School of Medicine.

The students delivered the items they collected to the Midwest Food Bank Bloomington/Normal warehouse this fall. MFB Haiti takes those donations and has the resources and know-how to get those items to people in Haiti. If you are interested in collecting items for Haiti or any other Midwest Food Bank location, please contact MFB to see what specific items are most needed. Thank you to these generous students.
