For Tom Pilch, volunteering is simply about helping people.
As one of ten siblings, Tom learned early to appreciate what he had and to look for ways to give back. After working his way through high school and college, he spent 42 years in the packaging industry before retiring. Today, he brings that same work ethic to Midwest Food Bank New England.
Tom’s service extends well beyond our warehouse. He volunteers with Bradley International Airport’s Travelers Aid program, serves as an ESL tutor, supports the Great Meadow Land Trust, helps at the Welles Turner Library, works local elections, and volunteers at the Glastonbury Apple Festival. He also speaks Spanish and Portuguese and is currently learning Ukrainian and Polish.
Tom’s Midwest Food Bank journey began thanks to fellow volunteer Mike Behrens, who invited him to help grind coffee beans. That simple invitation led to years of faithful service. Today, Tom continues volunteering regularly while encouraging others to join him.
Over the years, he has recruited more than 40 people to volunteer, many of whom now serve alongside him every month.
When asked why he volunteers, Tom’s answer is simple. He knows many people are hurting and believes everyone should do what they can to help.
What he enjoys most is the camaraderie. “I love knowing we’re doing something that helps people,” he says. “I’m not looking for recognition. People don’t need to know you’re helping, just that you’re helping.”
His enthusiasm has become contagious. As more people hear about MidwestFood Bank through Tom, many decide they want to become part of the mission themselves.
Thank you, Tom, for faithfully serving and for inspiring others to do the same.
