From the Desk of Development Manager Aaron Patterson
The older I get, the more I realize the importance of relationships in order to be a healthy individual. Good friends help each other. That same principle is true for an organization like Midwest Food Bank New England.
We recently received a grant from United Way of Connecticut that required the funds to be used to purchase food. Since much of the food we distribute is typically obtained through food rescue efforts, the grant gave us an opportunity to think differently about what we could purchase.
That is where another relationship came in.
One of our volunteers knew about Hatch for Hunger, an Indiana organization that sells surplus animal protein, including eggs, cheese, and meat, to food banks around the country at significant savings over wholesale prices.
Through that connection, and with additional support from donors, Midwest Food Bank New England was able to purchase an entire trailer load of eggs for distribution to our nonprofit partners.
Sometimes a relationship leads to another relationship, and suddenly a small connection creates a much bigger opportunity.
Or, in this case, eggs for days!
