Food surplus can end up as waste unless someone takes action. Gary Guminiak took action.
Gary is a senior industrial engineer for Ahold Delhaize USA, a multinational retail and wholesaling company with brands that serve millions of customers in the US, Europe, and Indonesia. Ahold Delhaize’s companies in the US include established and well-known supermarkets and online grocers. That means they often have surplus grocery items, and Gary didn’t want them to go to waste.
“We were ready to start operations last fall, and I researched food banks in the area and saw Midwest Food Bank in Manchester,” says Gary.
Donating surplus is a perfect fit for Ahold Delhaize USA. One of the east coast grocery brands they supply – Stop and Shop – is a champion for hunger relief.
“Gary ensures their dry grocery surplus never goes to waste by donating pallets of anything they cannot sell,” says Jan Young, Executive Director for MFB New England. “This is a wonderful partnership and a key ongoing source of quality food items adding both quantity and variety to our distributions.”
With 30-40% of the food supply in the US going to waste, according to the USDA, this donation gets quality food to people that need it. Otherwise, it would most likely end up in a landfill.
“We partnered with Midwest Food Bank New England because we wanted to support our local community,” says Gary.
Food donations like these from Ahold Delhaize allow MFB to give food, without charge, to nonprofits.
