Like most people, Darrell Pine planned and looked forward to retirement. His goal was to retire without financial worries or demands. So, when he punched out for the last time from Caterpillar last year, he knew he wanted to spend time at the gym, play some pickleball and softball, go fishing and explore photography.
But he also doesn't take this time for granted.

"I also wanted to know what God had in store for me in retirement," says Darrell.

He considers Matthew 6:20-21 a guide for how to spend your days. "Store up for yourselves in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Darrell then learned about Midwest Food Bank Peoria through a friend and current volunteer, Steve Thurman. Steve introduced Darrell to Mark Vonachen, the warehouse manager.

"Darrell has been a wonderful addition to the forklift crew," says Mark. "His experience has helped us grow and stay ahead of our recent growth in distribution numbers."

Another bonus, Mark says, is that Darrell is also a huge University of Michigan fan.

Qualified and experienced forklift drivers play a vital role in the volunteer pool at MFB. Darrell encourages others to consider MFB as a place to serve.

"I love it and think others will, too," says Darrell. "MFB is one of the best rewarding ministry secrets in the Peoria area and is also part of a great eternal retirement plan."

Darrell enjoys meeting new volunteers and sharing his experience.

"Come and introduce yourself," he says. "I'll be one of the guys on a fork truck."experience.
