June 2019 Update
2019 shipments
Tender Mercies is the mainstay of our feeding efforts in Haiti. Tender Mercies is a low-cost, high-nutrition meal packet of chicken-seasoned rice and beans fortified with vitamins and protein. The third sea-container of 2019 is now in Haiti. These shipments have included over a half million servings of Tender Mercies.
Storing the meals
Construction of two new secure storage and distribution depots at Cap Haitien and Jacmel are nearly complete. Each will have capacity equivalent to hold four to five sea-containers worth of food product. Along with Port au Prince, MFB Haiti now has three geographically distributed hubs. A fourth location in Les Cayes has been proposed but not established yet (see map below).
In-country production
A Midwest Food Bank Haiti team researched the viability of packing and sourcing Tender Mercies in-country during our March trip to Haiti. Thanks to a partnership with Pastor Abraham and Harvest Haiti Initiative, we will begin a test this summer with rice purchased in Haiti, and local Haitians employed to pack Tender Mercies meals at our Jacmel location. Our hope is to help the local economy with the purchase of some ingredients locally and with the employment offered.
