Midwest Food Bank of Illinois-Peoria
The influx of agencies applying for assistance from Midwest Food Bank drew awareness to the fact that the Bloomington-Normal, Illinois location could no longer support the demand in Central Illinois. Midwest Food Bank of Peoria was established in 2007 to meet the increased need and has grown rapidly ever since.
In the beginning, we served 65 agency partners, and today we serve over 308, primarily in the western half of Illinois but also in Eastern Iowa and parts of Missouri and Kentucky. A team of monthly volunteers ensures that Midwest Food Bank will forever be fighting against hunger.
Our work throughout the region has also brought attention to another issue; it’s one thing to feed, but it's another to supply affordably and nutritiously. Many individuals, families, and children lack adequate nutrition because of the expense of healthy, vitamin and nutrient-rich foods. In an attempt to solve this problem, location leaders teamed up with several universities and began researching. Eventually, they discovered a formula for a dry meal that is highly nutritious and relatively inexpensive. The development of this meal opened the door for the Tender Mercies program at the Peoria location, and a new opportunity to feed the hungry was created.
Volunteers started packaging the dry meals for the Tender Mercies program in 2010 by hand at the Peoria location. Since that time, the program has outgrown that location and moved into a new location in Morton, Illinois. Learn more about how you can help through our volunteer opportunities.
