"John came to us when we were praying to expand our forklift driver team, and he has served every week since," says Corey Barrette, Volunteer and Community Relations Manager for MFB, New England.
John was a fireman for 24 years in West Hartford, CT. He was also a machinist during Desert Storm and drove a forklift then.
"At MFB, I help drive cars during load out, drive a forklift, and will do whatever I have to do to help keep things clean and orderly in the warehouse," says John.
When John first retired, he cared for his mother, who had dementia. After she passed away, he had time and wanted to use it to help other people in his community. He heard about MFB through one of his wife's co-workers who had volunteered here.
"I want to help people, lift them up, help them do better. I've been blessed with three kids who graduated college and have been married to my wife for 28 years," says John. I just want to give back. There's always somebody that needs help."
He likes the friendly volunteer environment at MFB and getting to know food partners that come to the warehouse. John has formed a connection with one of those food partners.
"I have gotten to know Pastor Will from New Life. His church is in the area where I grew up," says John. "We talk about things in the area and sports. I look forward to him coming every Tuesday and our friendship."
John often serves quietly, just getting things done.
"Those who get to know John are blessed by his kindness, humility, and gentle spirit," says Corey. "We thank God for bringing him through our doors."
