At Midwest Food Bank New England, the volunteer culture revolves around essential qualities like selflessness, humility, kindness, and a spirit of service. Among the dedicated volunteers, Rick and Ann Mahoney not only align with this culture but also bring it to life.
Volunteering is a way of life for Rick and Ann, instilled from a young age by their parents. "Our moms instilled that spirit of giving in us," Rick explains. "It's been a part of our lives, just like breathing." They've made it a point to pass on this legacy to their children, teaching them the importance of giving back to the community.
"It's not just that they faithfully come in to grind coffee each week or kindly greet people who come in during load out," says Corey Barrette, MFB New England Volunteer and Community Relations Manager. "Rick and Ann see themselves as vessels in service to something greater than themselves."
Their backgrounds are diverse, with Ann having worked as a librarian and communications manager for a health and wellness company while Rick pursued a successful career as a lawyer for 45 years. Rick's experiences in various jobs, from cleaning sewers to practicing law, taught him the value of helping the "little guy" and thinking about others. This sense of responsibility is deeply rooted in their hearts.
"We have an obligation," Rick says. "To whom much is given, much is expected."
Their journey to Midwest Food Bank began when Ann read an article in the Hartford Courant newspaper about the organization's reliance on volunteers. Intrigued, she sent an email inquiring about how they could get involved. Their journey with MFB began, and they were immediately impressed by the warmth and dedication of the people they met.
Corey says: "Now and again, I meet someone about whom I say to myself, 'I want to be more like them.' That's Rick and Ann."
The Mahoneys have two sons and a daughter, each of whom has embarked on meaningful paths. Their eldest son serves as an airline pilot, their daughter is a Ph.D. historian with an upcoming book release, and their youngest son, also a historian, resides in Belfast and has authored a book.
Rick and Ann's presence at MFB ensures that people are not only fed but also deeply cared for, frequently prayed for, and genuinely loved. This extraordinary care and compassion set Midwest Food Bank New England apart, and the organization is truly blessed to have Rick and Ann as volunteers.
