Challenges and opportunities describe the food supply chain in the United States due to COVID 19. At Midwest Food Bank we are focusing on the opportunities and how we can link potential food waste to people in need.
MFB has started a "Save the Pork Program" that allows farmers to donate their hogs. With financial help from donors, MFB can cover the cost of processing and get this valuable product to people that need it. It helps the farmers, processor and the end user. So far, about $30,000 has been donated to this program and will continue as funds are available.
MFB has also been the recipient of whole, fully processed chickens from Tyson. "This donation is an incredible resource of protein for our partner agencies," says Tara Ingram, Executive Director in Normal. "It's a perfect mesh with our efforts to provide more nutritious food, and it is helping reduce waste in the food supply chain."
Some suppliers, like US Foods, are in a unique position to help Midwest Food Bank. Typically, they supply restaurants and now have food that was ordered months ago with no place to take it. These types of food partners are helping MFB meet the increased need due to COVID 19, and eliminate quality products from going into a landfill.
