Serving the Lord by serving at MFB Peoria

At a Collingsworth Family concert, Jim and Ardell Swezey heard about Midwest Food Bank for the first time. After a 2-hour volunteer session repackaging bulk food at MFB Peoria, Jim and Ardell knew they found their place to serve.

They began volunteering on Wednesdays until they were both retired. Now they are at MFB most afternoons.

"We now call Midwest Food Bank our second home," says Ardell. "Knowing it's a faith-based ministry makes it all the more special to us."

Jim is a retired microbiologist for the USDA, and Ardell retired from a position as a church custodian. They've been married 45 years and have one daughter in Chicago (Jennifer and husband, Sean), and two grandsons (Adam and Drew).

"We know God has blessed us with good health," says Ardell. "We want to give thanks to Him and use each day He gives us to serve Him and others."

Jim and Ardell are key volunteers at MFB Peoria. They help assess the bulk projects in the warehouse, finish up group projects, and encourage other group leaders.

"Jim and Ardell have a huge impact on our operations with their dependability and flexibility, and their unconditional love for all MFB volunteers," says Carrie Doolin, Volunteer Coordinator for MFB Peoria. "Their hearts are full of passion for our mission and the people who serve here."

"It is such a joy to serve the Lord in this ministry," says Ardell. "We get to meet and work alongside so many wonderful other volunteers."

Volunteers are crucial to the mission of Midwest Food Bank. Their dedication makes it possible for us to apply over 99¢ of every donated dollar to feeding those in need. Thank you to Jim and Ardell and the many faithful MFB volunteers like them.
