Big or small - businesses have found a way to support Midwest Food Bank. From a coffee shop to a grocery store chain to a heavy equipment manufacturer, they've all found ways to contribute to our mission.
Their support comes in a variety of ways as they create a culture of giving. Here are a few ways they impact nonprofits.
1. Grants - Some businesses have a corporate foundation that awards grants to nonprofits. For example, Kroger and Albertson's grocery stores awarded a grant to MFB.
2. Employee Matching Gifts - Many businesses match charitable gifts of their employees. The employee can direct their contribution to a specific nonprofit, and the employer then doubles that gift. Caterpillar is one of those businesses with a matching grant program, matching up to $10,000, making them one of MFBs largest donors.
3. Virtual Fundraising events - These events allow employees to reach the people they know and encourage them to donate. State Farm used this fundraising strategy to encourage their employees to raise money for peanut butter, a valuable item for MFB.
4. Volunteering - Businesses and MFB benefit when they schedule a group to volunteer at one of our warehouses. Because volunteers are an integral part of MFB, these teams add value by walking in the door. They benefit, too, because their group builds camaraderie. Some employers, like GROWMARK, give their employees paid days to volunteer.
5. Donated Products and Services - Companies have provided services from free printing to discounts on branded merchandise. Chick-fil-A has provided food for events for many MFB sites. Sometimes employees give their expertise to MFB, like analytical support, from Caterpillar employees.
6. Percentage of Sales - Small businesses are part of the effort, too, by donating a percentage of sales. This not only generates financial support for MFB but awareness, too. Eli's Coffee Shop, a business in Illinois, has a "donation creation" program, and they have selected MFB to receive those proceeds.
