The Volunteers Powering Midwest Food Bank’s Mission

FLORIDA

Inspiring Through Resilience and Determination

When Midwest Food Bank delivered supplies to the South Naples Trojans, one volunteer stood out: Jeanelle. With unrelenting energy, she jumped right in, unloading cases of PowerAde faster than anyone else.

"We always appreciate hard-working volunteers, but Jeanelle was remarkable," said Scot Buss of Midwest Food Bank. "She was so quick and efficient that I didn't even realize she had a disability at first. Her drive is incredible."

This interaction encapsulates Jeanelle's spirit—a blend of determination, resilience, and an eagerness to help others. Her journey, however, is far more inspiring than one moment of volunteering.

Overcoming Challenges and Finding Her Strength

Born with a limb difference, Jeanelle has faced physical challenges since birth. Despite these obstacles, she has never let them define her. Regular care from her prosthetist, Laura Ryder, and countless trips to Cape Coral for adjustments have been part of her life since the beginning. Yet, Jeanelle approaches every challenge with an unstoppable mindset.

Her passion for sports reflects this resilience. Jeanelle started in tackle football, playing until age 10. As the physical demands increased, she transitioned to basketball and flag football, where she excelled. Recently, she quarterbacked her Under Armour Rise team to a championship and contributed to the South Naples Trojans cheer squad's national title win.

A Standout Role Model

Currently in 5th grade, Jeanelle shines off the field as well. Once struggling academically, she now holds an impressive 3.6 GPA and inspires her classmates with her love for learning.

Her achievements are made even more remarkable by her upbringing. Raised by her mother, Megan, in a single-parent household, Jeanelle's story is one of perseverance. Megan works two jobs yet ensures her daughter never misses a game, practice, or school event.

"She's not just an athlete or a student; she's an inspiration to everyone she meets," said Coach Fritz Jaquez of the Lely family. "Jeanelle radiates positivity and shows us all what's possible with hard work."

Why Jeanelle's Story Matters

Jeanelle's life shows resilience, determination, and the strength of community. Her journey demonstrates that challenges can be opportunities for growth rather than barriers. Whether excelling in sports, achieving in school, or volunteering with Midwest Food Bank, Jeanelle shows how small acts—like helping unload supplies—can make a difference.

NEW ENGLAND

Faith, Teamwork, and Dedication: The Blondins' Story

John and Doreen Blondin are the kind of volunteers every organization dreams of: skilled, dependable, and brimming with a passion for service. As long-time volunteers with Midwest Food Bank New England, they embody what it means to serve with purpose and joy, enriching the lives of those around them.

The Heart of Service

Married for 45 years, John and Doreen's lives are a testament to faith and giving back. Their professional backgrounds—Doreen, a former state Department of Transportation worker, and John, a retired facility engineer—have equipped them with problem-solving skills and resilience. They're active in their church, with Doreen serving as parish council president and John working with the Knights of Columbus.

At Midwest Food Bank, this dynamic duo brings the same level of commitment. John recently earned his Class A license to drive big rigs, helping transport food across the region. Meanwhile, Doreen thrives in the fast-paced distribution environment, tackling tasks wherever she's needed, whether on pick teams, load teams, or accompanying John to pick up donations.

"John and Doreen have been a natural fit for Midwest Food Bank," says Corey Barrette, Executive Director of the New England division. "They're joyful, faithful, and always ready to serve wherever needed."

Finding Purpose Through Volunteerism

For Doreen, volunteering is more than just a way to stay active in retirement. It's a profoundly satisfying way to make an impact. "The world today is so chaotic. Volunteering here gives me perspective. Helping feed people in my corner of the world is incredibly fulfilling," she shares.

John agrees, noting that their work at Midwest Food Bank keeps them engaged while fostering a sense of community. Their shared dedication reflects a powerful belief: even small contributions can create meaningful change.

The Power of Community and Teamwork

One of the Blondins' favorite aspects of volunteering is the camaraderie at Midwest Food Bank. Doreen highlights the strong teamwork among staff and fellow volunteers. "Everyone here is working toward the same goal," she says. "The collaboration and kindness are truly unmatched."

John adds that the people they meet, both within Midwest Food Bank and in the communities they serve, make the experience worthwhile. Whether it's interacting with food recipients at Hockanum Valley Community Council or connecting with donors at Costco South Windsor, the Blondins feel inspired by the generosity and gratitude they encounter.

For the Blondins, faith is at the core of their commitment. Their service at Midwest Food Bank reflects a shared belief in living purposefully and helping others. Whether driving trucks to deliver food or fixing equipment in the warehouse, they see their contributions as an extension of their values.
