Shirley Christensen worked as an Office Manager at a "close-knit, family-feel" organization. When a larger company bought out the business in 2011, dynamics changed, and she knew it was time to retire. It was a good decision as Shirley began "Gigi School," helping her granddaughter two days a week. It was a wonderful bonding time for them.
Shirley always believed in volunteering and has done so at many places. When John, her husband of 42 years, passed away in 2021, Shirley began looking for a place where she could "belong" in addition to serving.
Shirley did some research when Rhonda Revels, Community Development Coordinator, invited her to join the MFB Texas Facebook group. MFB piqued her interest and made her heart hopeful and excited. She contacted Rhonda and took a tour of our facility. Shirley could "sense that the heart of MFB was good" and began volunteering right away.
"Food outreach has been a passion of mine for years," says Shirley. "How sweet of God to place me in the middle of my passion among a most delightful 'family.' God heard my cry and gave me a place of belonging where I can serve Jesus."
When asked what she likes best about volunteering at MFB Texas, Shirley has a long list:"
"The heart of the people and their enthusiasm and love of coming to serve at the food bank. I have never seen an organization that is so volunteer-based and people so willing to give their time above and beyond! The culture that MFB has nurtured is simply amazing. I marvel all the time at the good, good people who so unselfishly show up over and over again. The teamwork, the fellowship, the love of being able to provide people's basic need of food, the camaraderie, the joy of being able to serve Jesus together, the caring for each other, the laughter, being able to pray together, and going home at the end of the day and feeling thrilled and fulfilled."
"Shirley has been a huge blessing from day one, eager to serve and help with whatever is needed," says Rhonda. "She has a generous, giving heart and brings tremendous joy and encouragement to us all."
Shirley has two daughters and four grandchildren. She has a Dorkie (Mini Dachshund/Yorkie mix) who lives to do whatever she's doing. Shirley enjoys hiking, biking, kayaking, boating, games, crafts, and making origami gifts out of money."
"I love being amazed at God's beauty around us," says Shirley. "I like having a joyful heart, laughing, and having a good time at anything I do."
