Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida on September 26, 2024, as a powerful Category 4 storm. In the following days, the hurricane caused widespread devastation across several southeastern states, including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Catastrophic storm surges of up to 15 feet, heavy flooding, and power outages impacted millions, leaving communities struggling to recover from the destruction.
Midwest Food Bank has rapidly responded, mobilizing teams from its Florida, Georgia, and Morton divisions to provide critical disaster relief. Over the past week, Midwest Food Bank has delivered more than 16 semi-loads of food, water, and cleaning supplies to affected areas, with another 10 loads being prepared for shipment this week. These supplies are being distributed through key partners such as the Salvation Army, Compassion Alliance, and other local Midwest Food Bank partners. We expect this to grow into a 50+ semi-load effort.
Earlier this year
Between July and early September, Midwest Food Bank's Disaster Relief efforts brought aid to disaster-stricken communities in Texas, Georgia, and Florida.
The deliveries included:
- 7,240 food boxes across seven truckloads
- Five loads of water and sports drinks
- 4,032 cleaning kits in four truckloads to assist with post-disaster cleanup
Volunteers were crucial to this response, handling the loading and transportation of the relief.
Where and How We Helped:
- Texas: Received ten truckloads of relief to address severe flooding.
- Georgia: Four semi-loads went to help communities affected by flash floods.
- Florida: Two shipments provided water and cleaning kits after a tropical storm.
